A lighter framework of cast iron hoops linked by wires supported climbers well but did not dominate the garden like timber or masonry (B. Parsons, Gardens of England, 1908).

Utilitarian elements were ornamented in the garden. Lutyens’s working well at Goddards, Surrey (1898–1900), tucked away at the side of the house, has as much consideration as the main Well Court.

Semicircular pools were used against walls; more challenging was to let a circular pool into a wall with a semicircle projecting into the paving in front and a pipe spouting water through the mouth of a mask. In this case the wall was usually supported by a hemispherical backdrop to the pool. This came to be regarded as a particular trademark of Lutyens’s gardens, along with stone-lined rills, such as at Deanery Garden, Sonning, Berkshire, and Hestercombe, Somerset, where rills and pools were combined.
